Reading at South Ferriby Primary School
Key Stage 1
In Reception and Key stage 1 a bespoke phonics system is in place. Children are taught the phases of phonics at points during the year.
Individual reading does occur. Children's reading is developed through guided reading sessions where there is an emphasis on ensuring pupils have de-coding strategies as well as understanding of the text.
At South Ferriby Primary School we would like to encourage you to read with your child at home. All of our children have passwords for Oxford Owl on line reading books which they can access both at home and school. When children read at home we ask that this is recorded in their reading record and then we will reward in school with team points.
Our aim is to foster a love of reading. We involve pupils in selecting the books we have in our library.
We use our scheme books to teach the basics of reading and allow the children to choose their own books when they are competent.
Twice a year at our school fair we have a book stall giving parents opportunity to buy high quality books for £2 each.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2 reading is taught in guided reading sessions unless chldren need more support in fluency.
Guided reading is mostly based on understanding and pupils learn to answer a variety of types of questions.
